In their first headline tour since singer Jack Bergin’s temporary break from music due to illness, one of the best Australian metalcore acts going right now Void of Vision hit the road for a farewell to the CHRONICLES era with the Das Ende Tour, featuring a stack bill of international supports, including Like Moths to Flames (doing their first Australian tour in 8 years), and two bands making their Australian live debuts, in Varials, and ANNALYNN.
First cab off the rank was Thai metalcore band ANNALYNN. This was a band that I wasn’t super familiar with, but these guys set an insanely high bar for the night. From the jump, they set the crowd on fire. In a set of belter after belter, there were two songs in particular that really stood out to me. One was their latest song, ‘DISAPPEAR’, which gave me mad Amity Affliction vibes, and ‘Leveling God’, which was a tune that when the breakdown hit, regressed me into being 25 again and wanting to just throw down in the pit. Unfortunately, I am 35 and too body broken to do that anymore, but the fact that happened to me during a song I didn’t even know, tells me myself just how good these guys are. Hopefully Greyscale find a way to bring them back soon, because we need more tours from these boys.

Up next was a band I was very familiar with, Varials. These guys are a metalcore band from Philadelphia. Now, these guys have been on my radar for so long. So finally getting a chance to see them was something I had been waiting for, for literally years. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to catch a lot of their set, as during their first song, ‘A Body Wrapped in Plastic’, a fight broke out literally right in front of me. I ended up missing the first half of their set, which sucked so bad. But I did get to come back to hear ‘Empire of Dirt’ and ‘Stigmata’, so personally, it wasn’t a total wash. From what I was able to catch, these guys are crazy tight live. Special shout out too, to Eddie Knight. The dude is an absolute powerhouse live.

Like Moths to Flames were up next, and at this point, the show had a high watermark. But I didn’t expect LMTF to blow the venue up as big as they did. Coming out with all guns blazing, they kicked the show off with ‘Ameliorate’ and their latest track, ‘I Found the Dark Side of Heaven’, which absolutely kills live. They kicked out an old classic in ‘Deathmarks’, before busting into a song I’m pretty sure has never been played before, ‘Even God Has A Hell’. The back end of the set ruled too, with ‘The Preservation of Hate’, ‘Nowhere Left to Sink’, and set closer ‘Bury Your Pain’ leaving the Triffid crowd begging for more in the best set of the night.

After a venue wide sing along to ‘Iris’ by The Goo Goo Dolls, the vibe was instantly set for Void of Vision to take to the stage. In what would be a common occurrence throughout the night, wherever there was a chance to sing along, the crowd was just as loud as vocalist Jack Bergin, without the speakers. Jack didn’t speak much throughout the show, but instead took us through a journey of the Chronicles era of the band, broken up into what felt like 3 acts. As an AI voice greeted us to the Void of Vision experience, the show kicked off with not just my favourite Void of Vision song, but one of my top five current songs, ‘BERGHAIN’. In rapid succession, the band ran through songs like ‘DOMINATRIX’, ‘Ghost in the Machine’, and ‘VAMPYR’.

After a short break, we got the second act, which included a massive chant for ‘Decay’, before busting in ‘ASMR’, and ‘HELL HELL HELL’. From what I can gather, a remix of ‘GOTHIKA’ was supposed to be the finale to the second act of the show, but I don’t know if there was a technical issue, or if it was actually supposed to be part of the show, but I couldn’t tell exactly what was happening. The song seems to have started, then stopped, then lead guitarist James McKendrick just stood mid stage and played guitar to seemingly no audio. It was a really surreal experience, but yeah. I don’t know if there was some technical mishap that caused the issue, or if this was really part of the show.

After that, the show broke into the third act, with ‘OHNE SICHT’ getting the crowd amped with the “This is Void of Vision” line, before the show really kicked into overdrive, with ‘INTO THE DARK’. I’ve seen Void of Vision live three times now, and I always forget how much of a sleeper hit this song is. The crowd went ballistic for it, before being lulled into ‘ALTAR’. There was no backing track for the Hannah Greenwood feature on the song, but Jack instead sang both parts, in which towards the end, he seems to be understandably struggling. The man had been pushing himself for the last 50 minutes, and no one cared about him not quite hitting the notes. Closing the main set off with ‘THE LONELY PEOPLE’, and having the AI voice from the show thanking everyone for coming, the CHRONICLES era of the band came to a close. But the show wasn’t over yet, as we got the live debut of the bands first song of their new era, ‘Angel of Darkness’, as an epilogue to the show. This epilogue felt like the dawn of the new era of Void of Vision, and I’m excited to see where this band goes from here.
