EP review – Charlotte Poynton
Meanjin duo WIIGZ, consisting of pop music aficionados Zoë and Hannah, have released their debut EP entitled Songs To Catwalk To, which is a masterful collection of electro-pop tracks. Reminiscent of Haiku Hands and the dance-pop scene of the late 90’s to early 2000’s, Songs To Catwalk To is an absolute skip-free bop from start to finish. This debut collection from WIIGZ leaves audiences begging for more and anticipating their era of world domination.
Track one of this EP is titled ‘Catwalk’, and fittingly starts with the strutting click of high heels and a funky rhythmic motif that carries throughout the song. Transporting listeners to their own red carpet catwalk event, there is a chorusing of paparazzi requests and fans screaming out praises. ‘Catwalk’ is a very strong opening to this EP, and a track that manifests a high-fashion, hot girl summer of donning short skirts and dark sunglasses.
‘Work’, the second track of Songs To Catwalk To, is a cute 2000’s pop song that sounds like it belongs on the store playlist of Supré, or within the music recommendation columns of Total Girl Magazine. This song takes a step back from the flashy pulsing beat of ‘Catwalk’ and embodies your tween expectations of what clubbing would feel like. Glistening with superstar energy, ‘Work’ is the perfect addition to every chill vibes or secret popstar playlist.
Drawing in audiences with an alluring whisper of “come with me” is the third track off the WIIGZ Ep, titled ‘Lifestyle Of A Supermodel’. This song has major Britney Spears vibes, with a dance beat that would thrive in a club in 2008 and lyrics that channel the highest level of confidence imaginable. ‘Lifestyle Of A Supermodel’ also has an official music video that is dripping with rich and famous energy, which makes you question why Zoë and Hannah of WIIGZ aren’t already professional supermodels.
Club banger ‘Freaky’ comes in as track four on Songs To Catwalk To, introducing a darker and more sultry vibe to the EP. This song is surely a highlight of WIIGZ’s live set, with a strong bass and very catchy chorus melody. ‘Freaky’ will most definitely be stuck in your head for hours on end, but a constant loop of this dance-floor filler is nothing to complain about.
Track five of this album is a pop masterpiece in ‘Mini Skirt’. This song could easily be an excerpt from a mid-2000’s Lady Gaga album, with the hookiest earworms of the entire EP and an insanely bouncy beat. I can definitely confirm that I was singing the chorus hook of “cherry kisses for dessert” for quite a while after first hearing this track, and will most likely be seeing this song creep into my most streamed tracks of the month. ‘Mini Skirt’ can aptly be described as the secret weapon of Songs To Catwalk To, and is definitely the song to be recommending to all your friends at every given opportunity.
Closing off the EP is ‘French Tips’, a classic dance-pop track that would feel at home in your house party playlist. A powerful piece that is guaranteed to get every person within proximity dancing, this song has everything from bold hot girl summer vibes to a music video romanticising the act of living it up. This track completes this EP of banger after banger, proving that it is impossible for WIIGZ to ever miss!
If you’re loving this EP like I am, make sure that you catch WIIGZ as they perform at the Gold Coast leg of the Spilt Milk festival on Sunday the 26th of November, 2023.
