Review by Cecilia Pattison Levi
Melbourne band Playlunch have released a new song: the story of a bogan psycho tradie called ‘Keith’. The music video is a real hoot as the band have teamed up with AFL Hall of Famer Barry Hall to depict the male counterpart of a suburban “Karen” – the “Keith”. It’s all done with a swaggering funk groove with big horns, a huge beat, a sense of humour and swearing that is done so authentically while mentioning the “guy from the local council”.
The subject of Current Affair stories and Tracy Grimshaw reporting – ‘Keith’ is a local menace with a ute, trailer, and parking rage enabled by the local council. The song captures that neighbour that many Australians know and hate. But all done with a sublime tongue in cheek sense of fun.
Playlunch stir the social pot and bring on suburban World War III with ‘Keith’ and his “car parking issues” within the genre of “bogan funk”. The song has a fantastic driving guitar riff, thumping bassline and euphoric electropop. The lyricism is inspired by the real-life tradie neighbour from hell whose real name is unknown from when the band lived at Hotham Street. The song and lyrics are razor-sharp and so witty. ‘Keith’ is the follow up single after the release of ‘Boys’ which is another commentary-laced dancefloor jam aiming at the hapless Aussie male.
Playlunch have a new album on the way: the singles ‘Keith’ and ‘Boys’ confirm that the music will be pumping and jumping, with a whole lot of funk, and will have subject matter that isn’t afraid to court controversy. If you need a lift – this song will make you smile. Better still go and see Playlunch live – they are so good!
Playlunch’s ‘Keith’ (listen in the link) is out now on all good streaming services – sophomore album coming soon!
