What do you get when you mix a bit of love, gratitude, insecurity, the name of a northern Meanjin suburb, and a small missing foam guy? You get Red Hill’s debut EP, Where’s Randy?, why of course! This EP consists of 6 live-tracked songs, written by the self-described quirky and queer band during their first year together, and recorded and mixed by Demetry Malahoff.
I was first met with the pure magic of Red Hill at a backyard Sofar Sounds show in August last year, and I became an immediate fan. Whether it was their raw and honest lyricism, unabashed authenticity, or the way every audience member was soaking up the wholesome energy of the group, Red Hill’s irresistible charm made them a band to keep an eye on in 2025. We’re merely weeks into the year, but Where’s Randy?, a titular ode to a “small guy made out of foam or something” who the band refer to as their son, has cemented Red Hill as one of the most exciting Meanjin bands in our scene right now.
Well Roared Lion
The EP opens with ‘Well Roared Lion’, a track full of nostalgia and homeliness. The first demo shared between members during the conception of Red Hill, this song has such a brain-scratchy energy led by an intoxicatingly addictive guitar melody. ‘Well Roared Lion’ exudes pure Kimya Dawson charm, leading me to realise that Red Hill’s music would feel perfectly at home in the soundtrack of Juno (2007). During my initial listen of the EP, it was hard to move past this track and the level of familiarity and comfort it exudes.
Blue Card
‘Blue Card’ comes in next to usher a well-needed break from the tumultuous reality we find ourselves faced with at this current time in the world. A blend of gorgeous vocal harmonies and social commentary, conveyed through lyrics such as “I’m not trying to be a critic of modern art”, ‘Blue Card’ is a call to step back, disconnect your phone, and perhaps pour yourself a cup of tea as you process and recoup.
Coming Up Blank
Track three of Where’s Randy?, titled ‘Coming Up Blank’, has a beautiful instrumental build that impeccably conveys the emotional weight of lyrics. This track is quite reminiscent of Frente’s iconic sound and sound; that unique blend of delicate vocals and powerfully enticing instrumental melodies are another niche that Red Hill find themselves comfortably nestled in.
Decaf
‘Decaf’ features the beautiful vocal harmonies that Red Hill has become known for. With delicate vocals contributing to the dreamscape sonic atmosphere, ‘Decaf’ soundtracks a disjoint from what was once familiar, ending with the often empty promise of “I’ll see you around sometime, yeah?” to symbolise the growth from a past dependant bond.
Not Soon Enough
Landing with all the force of an iconic Disney Channel hit, which is a massive complement coming from this Disney kid, ‘Not Soon Enough’ is a punchy, rock-infused interlude that acts as an emotional release as we transition through to the end of the EP.
Too Soon
Closing off Where’s Randy? is a track that will take you away from your day-to-day and plant you in a transcendent dimension, at least for the three and a half minute run time. ‘Too Soon’ is a song you will need to see live to truly appreciate the magic of the harmonies, though I do truly recommend listening to the official recording on repeat until you become an unofficial member of Red Hill. My words alone cannot do justice to this pure piece of art, though I can confirm that this is the song you want to show to people when you’re sharing the best of the Meanjin scene.

If you’re loving this EP and want to support Red Hill directly, you can do so by heading out to one of their shows, purchasing Where’s Randy? on Bandcamp, buying and wearing their new merch shirts, and sharing your love for new music on your socials!
PSA: Red Hill are still looking for Randy. Last seen at the indoor stage of Greaser in November 2023. I am beginning to worry for his small foam self. If you happen to find Randy, please share this wonderful EP with him!
