8 October 2023 – Brisbane Entertainment Centre – words by Joe Harbour – pictures by Bec Harbour
I was thinking today about cool collabs that could happen as it seems that they’re more common these days. And so my mind went to Regurgitator and Weezer who played a double act at the Brisbane entertainment centre out at Boondall Sunday night. I mean imagine a mash up of ‘Beverly Hills’ and ‘I Sucked a Lot of Cock’. It makes sense right? Or perhaps mashing their names up, Weegurgitator, sounds like my drunk uncle trying to say Regurgitator if I’m honest.
But seriously, Sunday night couldn’t come soon enough, I was excited knowing I was going to be sitting in the most uncomfortable chairs in entertainment history and on this night next to a slightly drunk 7 foot Hurrr Hurrr (that’s how he looked and sounded out the corner of my eye – think Beavis and Butthead) and his very high-pitched friend.
Anyway Regurgitator came on dressed as Nuns starting the set off with ‘I Sucked a Lot of Cock’. Not sure why they decided Nuns were the go because later they stripped down to look like painters and decided to do the rest of show looking like that!
Regurgitator have been around for a bit now, they have their craft down pretty pat and sound ballsy as ever and I thought they had a good sound mix from where I was sitting. They ran through the classics and tracks like ‘I like your new stuff better than your old stuff’, ‘Polyester Girl’, ‘Track 1’, ‘Black Bugs’ and ‘Kong Foo Sing’ to name a few. I really like ‘!(the song formally known as)’ and was stoked to see them throw that in the set as well. They closed out with a Metallica tease by playing ‘Enter Sandman’ but decided to bugger off instead and not play the whole song.
So was it cool to see Regurgitator?
#Yes.
Next up Weezer.
Do you know or like nerds? If you like Weezer you probably do.
Anyway I see Weezer as nerdy pop punk rock, and the reason is because they look nerdy and sometimes sing about nerdy stuff (Dungeons and Dragons – ‘In the Garage’ anyone?). ‘Beverly Hills’ is a bit of a step out from this and has video clip filmed at the playboy mansion with beautiful girls all over the place, it was cool to see it live.
Throughout the set there were tunes we all knew and loved like ‘My Name is Jonas’, ‘Photograph’, ‘El Scorcho’ and ‘Pork and Beans’.
Rivers Cuomo is a pretty gifted song writer and he has a knack for being able to write relatable and catchy songs and mid-set we got ‘Undone – The Sweater Song’ and then we got a chance to hear some acoustic versions of songs like ‘The World has Turned’, ‘Only in Dreams‘ (which thankfully they turned on the full version toward the end as this has a ripping chunky riff) and a little ditty he wrote about the DGC record label lady he’d ring… nawww – ‘Susanne’.
Later we got ‘Perfect Situation’, ‘Island in the Sun’ (old Hurrr Hurrr loved that one cos he sung his arse off when they played it) ‘Say it Ain’t So’ and ‘All my Favourite Songs’.
I felt a bit like a dufus at the end though, my set list turned out to have the encore songs missing and what I thought was strange omission of ‘Buddy Holly’ turned out to be fake news and I could hear it from outside as I was walking to the car.
So was Weezer good to see?
#Yes.
