3 November 2024 – The Triffid, Brisbane – words by Lucas Bell – pictures by Bec Harbour
On their only non-Neverender show of the tour, Brisbane played host to a special one-off headline show from one of the greatest bands currently touring (in my humble opinion), Coheed and Cambria. The boys are in town for the Monolith Festival, plus some smaller shows in Adelaide and Hobart, and gave Brisbane with two shows in two nights. And for this show, we were also graced by Canadian instrumentalists, Intervals, who also played Monolith.
Intervals opened up the show with a longer set compared to their Monolith set, and this show was even more chaotic and fun than yesterday. The set was a fun mix of old and new, with new songs ‘Neurogenesis’ and ‘Nootropic’ opening the set up. ‘Rubicon Artist’ is an older track, but goes off live and is so fun. The fun didn’t last the whole way though, as at this point in the show, some of the gear started to fail, with straight up electricity cuts happening on the stage. Not sure what was going on, but the boys played through it like absolutely champs, and closed off the show with ‘Lock & Key’ and ‘circuit bender’, despite the technical issues.

As ‘Keeping the Blade’ played over the speakers, Coheed and Cambria walked out to a huge applause. They opened the set with ‘Ten Speed’, which honestly, has one of the best riffs to open a show. Much like last night, they didn’t do much talking, and instead blasted through a huge set of tracks, including ‘Crossing the Frame’, ‘Apollo I’ (one of my three all time favourite Coheed tracks), ‘Once Upon Your Dead Body’, and ‘Wake Up’. For those that have noticed, these five songs were part of the Neverender set they played at Monolith. It’s cool to have seen these songs again, because stuff like ‘Apollo I’ and ‘Crossing the Frame’ are songs I love that I don’t think I’ll ever hear live again. But I was hoping for more variety in the set.

The back half of the set included more songs from Monolith, with ‘A Favor House Atlantic’, ‘The Suffering’, and ‘Fuel for the Feeding End’ all making it part of the show. Claudio and Travis briefly said “hey” to the crowd, as the crowd were bantering back with the band about how long it’s been, and that we were happy to have them back, before we got our first new song of the night, ‘Shoulders’. I got to see this track last year on the Neverender cruise, but seeing such a loud song in a small room was super fun to watch the pit moving. They moved straight into ‘Delirium Trigger’, before closing the main set off with ‘In Keeping Secrets’.

After a quick game of encore peek a boo, the band returned to the stage. While the band were off stage, the crowd chanted for ten more songs, which was hilarious when they came back on stage. They mentioned how they love playing Brisbane, and they wanted to give us one more new song before they left for the night. The ten song chant broke out again, as the intro to ‘The Liars Club’ kicked off the encore. This is a song from the outset I wasn’t super into when I first heard it, but catching it live a few times now, it’s grown on me, and should become a live staple. The set closed off with ‘Welcome Home’, as is tradition, to conclude an epic two night run of my favourite band in the world, playing my city, to send everyone (and me specifically) home very very very happy.
