Freo five-piece GRUB officially stamp their arrival with the announcement of their self-titled debut album (October 9 via Wing Sing Records), and the release of blistering lead single ‘Shake It’. They are releasing their self-titled album on 9 October. We had a quick Q&A with singer Matilda to find out more about the world of GRUB!
Tell us how the name GRUB came about?
To be honest, there’s no interesting story behind that one.
I was keen for a short band name with 12 syllables and we had a process of going through a lot of hilarious words.
In the end, GRUB felt pretty on point though.
Depending on your definition of GRUB, the word invokes something a bit gross, dirty and dishevelled which fits us perfectly.
Fremantle seems to be a hotbed of talent – is it the Fremantle Doctor blowing the talent in?
I reckon it is! Nothin like a wharfy town which used to be full of brothels, bikies and cheap heroin to birth a town of artsy folks. Gotta love it!
We got some truly incredible musicians in this joint.
‘Shake It’ has been described as “dark disco” – what is dark disco? It actually sounds like nothing I have heard before!
Wicked! I love that we are making sounds people haven’t heard before!
Look it may shock people to hear that none of GRUB are known to tear up the dance floor on a Saturday night but we all like the dance music.
Dark Disco is just GRUB’s version of a dance track which inevitably will sound a bit creepy and cooked. I love creepy cooked shit you can shake ya leg too.
‘Shake It’ is the first taste of your self titled album, what else can we expect from the album?
This record has got a few different sound vibes going on. I love that this band doesn’t slot easily into a genre and you’ll hear that from the album.
The unifying element through each song is that beautiful darkness, and also my inability to not say ‘fuck’ or ‘cunt’ a fair bit.
Blake Scott of The Peep Tempel first heard you on the radio while driving – what doors have opened with Blake throwing his support behind you?
Without trying to piss in his pocket too much, Blake Scott is one of the coolest musicians in the world. So if he’s telling people to check out this band called GRUB and listen to their music then I reckon people are. He knows a lot of folks in the biz that we don’t who will have listened to our music because Blake said they should.
What’s next for GRUB?
Its early days so who bloody knows!
We release the record early October with an album launch gig which will be fun as.
Play shows, hopefully journey across to the East Coast for some touring, we’re working on the second record already.
That’s about it for now.
Rock and roll baby.
